How to approach many problems from chapters 4 and 5
Draw a force diagram for each relevant system or object.
Ask yourself: What are the forces acting on the object?
In 9A, the force must come from direct contact or gravity.
If it is contact, is it perpendicular
to the surface of contact (normal) or parallel (friction)?
Label your forces “A on B” to help with your bookkeeping.
All forces on the same force diagram should have the same
Once you set up the problem and you believe,
your diagram is correct, it is sometimes convenient to
shorten the notation (but be clear)
