The dot product means that only the component of the force
along the direction of displacement contributes to the work
What I called the “distance s” is really a displacement vector
If the Force is constant and the displacement vector is a straight line
If the force is not constant over the displacement (like with a spring)
Or if the path is curved with a non-constant force
you have to work out the integral
This is just the vector component of F along s
