Ultra-relativistic heavy ion physics focuses on understanding one of the four fundamental forces: the Strong Interaction. Through experiment, I am trying to understand how it leads to structures like protons and other exotic particles. I analyze data from the STAR (Solenoidal Tracker At RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider)) detector at Brookhaven National Lab in Upton, New York. In 2011, we collected data from Au+Au collisions at center-of-mass energies of 19.6 and 27 GeV per nucleon pair and I am analyzing the datasets with the hope of more fully understanding the phase transition of nuclear matter at these energies.
